A Message from the Dean

Dean of ASB

Congratulations to our recent Anisfield School of Business graduates and welcome to our incoming students, faculty, and staff.   There has never been a more exciting time to be part of the Anisfield School of Business community

With current enrollment of more than 1200 students, the business school is now one of the largest of the five schools of Ramapo College of New Jersey.  We offer majors or concentrations in Accounting, Economics, Finance, Information Systems, International Business, Marketing, and Management. And while the school has traditionally offered minor degree programs in Economics and International Business, we recently introduced new minor programs in Accounting and Information Systems.  Also new this year is our Business Essentials Certificate Program.  This program provides a basic yet broad foundation in the business disciplines through the completion of four academic courses and two professional skills seminars.  The program is intended for non-business majors with an interest in business and for members of the local business community seeking to deepen their understanding of business principles.

In December of 2007, we reached an important milestone toward our goal of attaining accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), when AACSB approved our Accreditation Plan.  Attainment of AACSB accreditation would place the Anisfield School of Business among the elite business schools in the world.

In September of 2007, classes began for the first time in our new Anisfield School of Business building which offers state-of-the-art classrooms, lecture halls, computer labs, study lounges, meeting rooms and an email lounge.   Then, at the April 28, 2008 dedication ceremony for the new building, Richard and Millicent Anisfield surprised and delighted those present with their announcement of an additional gift of $3 million to the school that bears their name.   This brings to $6 Million the total gifts that our wonderful benefactors have made to the school.  This latest gift will fund the completion of the fifth floor of the new building, adding a number of new classrooms, faculty offices, and an exciting, new Global Financial Markets Trading Laboratory.  With real-time access to financial data from around the world, students will expand their knowledge of the workings of global markets by managing virtual portfolios of stocks, bond, currencies, commodities and currencies.  The lab will provide a fertile environment for faculty and student research and we will develop a number of new courses, student clubs and other rich learning experiences around its abundant capabilities.

This past year also saw the establishment of the Sabrin Center for Business Excellence.  Initial funding for the Center will come from a $250,000 endowment established by Dr. Murray Sabrin, one of our esteemed finance professors, and his wife, Florence. The center will focus on the study of uniquely successful business ventures and the people who made them successful. The cornerstone activity of the center will be a distinguished speaker series featuring business leaders whose achievements exemplify the principles of business excellence.  In addition, the center will sponsor student scholarship and faculty and student research.

The next few years promise to be just as exciting as the last few as we strive to fulfill our vision statement: “….  to be the premier public undergraduate business school in the greater New Jersey/New York metropolitan area, whose graduates will actively and responsibly engage in shaping the future”.  If you would like to learn more about our school, or share your ideas, skills or other resources to further our vision, please contact me.
