Communication Arts Major (CA)
The Communication Arts Major offers five comprehensive
programs in the following areas of study:
- Digital Filmmaking
(documentary, fiction, screenwriting, television production and theory)
- Global Communication and Media
(persuasion, advertising)
- Journalism
(community journalism, new media journalism, photojournalism)
- Visual Communication Design
(graphic, print and web design, interactive animation, motion graphics)
- Writing
(creative writing, writing for publication, writing for the media, promotions writing)
Students in the Communication Arts major begin their study with two required foundation courses, Media Literacy and Idea Development, where they are exposed to contemporary media, theory, criticism, creative thinking, critical analysis, and idea generation.
Once a student declares a concentration within Communication Arts, they follow a program specifically designed to prepare them for a career or post-graduate studies in their area of interest.
Graduates of the Communication Arts major have established professional careers as journalists, writers, media specialists, graphic designers, web and animation designers, filmmakers and editors, while others have gone on to graduate school.
Faculty
The Communication Arts faculty is comprised of scholars, filmmakers, writers, journalists, authors, and award winning designers, well-known in their fields for their body of work. They graduated from such institutions as Columbia University, New York University, Ohio University, Rutgers University, School of Visual Arts, Sarah Lawrence College, and Tyler School of Art (Temple University). With faculty support, Communication Arts students have won numerous design awards, presented scholarly papers at prestigious communications conferences, and screened their films at well-known student film festivals.
Clubs and Extra Curricular Activities
Experiential opportunities and extracurricular activities in the Communication Arts Major include:
- Weekly Cinematheque film screenings in the H wing auditorium
- The National Communication Arts Honor Society (the Rho Phi chapter of Lambda Pi Eta)
- The Creative Media Club
- RCTV Club (Ramapo College TV station)
- Media Collision, the annual spring showcase of student work and a Short Shots, a mid-year student film presentation
- Regular presentations, panels and workshops by filmmakers, journalists, writers, designers, and other professionals in Communication Arts-related disciplines.
Graduates of the Communication Arts major have established professional careers as journalists, writers, media specialists, graphic designers, animation artists, filmmakers and editors, while others have gone on to graduate school.
Students completing this program receive a B.A. degree.
