Journalism Concentration (CA): Home

The Journalism Concentration seeks to prepare students in the basics of news reporting, information gathering and writing. Students learn to become critical thinkers and apply a strong liberal arts base in analyzing coverage. They learn the importance of total, inclusive community coverage, and also what it means to work in a converged newsroom environment.

The journalism concentration combines journalistic theory with practice and ethical decision-making applying an experiential approach to teaching news reporting and writing.

Student journalists learn how to identify and develop good story ideas, how to find and interview reliable sources, mine documents for information and craft well-written balanced stories that are relevant to the reader.

The lower-level sequence focuses on the nuts and bolts of news reporting, writing and editing; students, adopting beats, draw stories on campus and from covering local neighborhoods.

In upper level courses, students apply their skills working on the campus newspaper, radio or television station. They also learn how to work cross-platform building multimedia stories in print, online and for broadcast. Students can explore other journalism skills as copy editing and photojournalism. They complete internships in media outlets in New York City and North Jersey.

What is a Concentration?

A concentration is a focus on a more targeted field of the major. Some majors have concentrations in which you choose your course of study. These majors include Business Administration, Communication Arts, Music, and Social Science.
