The Job Search

Graduating college and looking for your first job can be a daunting experience. This guide was developed to provide you with strategies, information and resources in this endeavor. Setting a goal and developing a plan to meet that goal are critical to success in a job search. Job hunting requires significant time commitments. Self-management, planning and organizing are key skills to practice during this time and are valuable in all areas of your personal and professional life. You are encouraged to participate in Cahill Center programs and services as well as meet with career services staff for support and guidance.

Strategies to Implement in Your Job Search

Preparation consists of self-assessment, resume and portfolio development and the ability to target your job search accordingly.

Research includes career exploration, company research and identification of trends in the marketplace that will affect your job search.

Networking is cultivating relationships with people who can help you in your job search. Building and maintaining a strong network are important aspects of your professional life.

Informational Interviewing is meeting and speaking to professionals to help you develop your network, clarify your career goals and research prospective companies and jobs.

Advertised Job Postings via traditional methods such as newspapers or Internet Job Banks are not to be ignored in your job search and should be looked at daily.

Job Hunting on the Internet is included in the Cahill Center publication JOB HUNTING STRATEGIES, which lists Internet sites for research and job hunting.

Job Search Clubs offer support and guidance to the job seeker while providing guest speakers, networking opportunities, career coaching and placement assistance. Contact Debra Stark (201) 684-7221, dstark@ramapo.edu.

Job Fairs are opportunities to meet with many employers brought together in one place and at one time for the purpose of meeting potential candidates.

Job Shadowing is an excellent tool to research career options and learn more about a specific field.

Employment Agencies can offer you an opportunity to break into a specific industry, test a career option and learn key skills.

Follow up is essential to success. Take action on all leads, contacts and research. Send thank you letters after all interviews.

Evaluation of your efforts and strategies is continual and important to securing the job you want.
