The Student Literacy Corps (SLC) comprises students, faculty and staff committed to social change and justice by addressing illiteracy at sites in Bergen and Passaic Counties. According to the National Adult Literacy Survey, 40-44 million adults in our country demonstrated skills in the lowest levels of prose, document and quantitative proficiencies. This means that people have difficulty or cannot read medicine labels, job applications and so on. In addition to the millions of adults, untold numbers of schoolchildren are reading well below grade level. If not remediated, these problems will only continue into adulthood. The Class Enroll in MEDU 211 -- Student Literacy Corps. This 3 credit course satisfies the general education global/ multicultural requirement. In the SLC you will learn about the problem of illiteracy in our society and the teaching techniques to help people acquire the tools they need to transform their lives.
