Immigration Information: SEVIS Fee

Effective September 1, 2004, all students applying for an F-1, J-1, or M-1 visa must pay a fee before being issued a U.S. visa.

Students who must pay this fee:

  • F-1 visa applicants who have an I-20 marked for "initial attendance", and issued on or after September 1, 2004.
  • Any F-1 student who has been absent from the United States for a period of five months or longer, who was not engaged in activities toward the completion of their F-1 program, and now wishes to re-enter the United States for a new program of study.
  • An F-1 student applying for reinstatement, who has been out-of-status for a period of five months or longer.
  • J-1 visa applicants with a DS-2019 marked "begin a new program" and issued on or after September 1, 2004.  
    Exception:
    J-1s sponsored by the Federal Government (program numbers beginning with G-1, G-2, G-3).
  • Any J-1 exchange visitor sponsored by the federal government who will be transferring to another J-1 program not sponsored by the federal government.
  • Any J-1 exchange visitor applying for a change of category within the U.S.\
  • Any J-1 exchange visitor who is applying for reinstatement
  • Any student filing an application for a change of status to F-1 or J-1.

Visa applicants must show proof of payment of the SEVIS fee at their visa interview. A visa will not be issued until proof of payment is confirmed by the embassy.

Unfortunately, this fee cannot be paid directly at a U.S. Embassy, Consulate, or Port of Entry.

How to pay the SEVIS fee:

I. On the Internet with a credit card.
  1. You must receive your SEVIS I-20 or DS-2019 before you can pay this fee.
  2. Go to www.fmjfee.com 
  3. Fill out form I-901, Application for SEVIS fee payment.

You will be asked your SEVIS I.D. #.
This number is at the top of your I-20 or DS-2019 and begins with the letter N.

Make sure that you answer the questions exactly as they appear on your
Certificate of Eligibility (I-20 or DS-2019).

  1. Enter your credit card information.
  2. Print out the payment confirmation at the end of the process!!
    You must bring it with you to your visa interview as proof of payment!!!
II. By mail
  1. You must receive your SEVIS I-20 or DS-2019 before you can pay this fee.
  2. Go to http://www.ice.gov/sevis/i901/index.htm and print out form I-901.
  3. Complete form I-901, making sure to answer each question exactly as it appears on your Certificate of Eligibility (I-20 or DS-2019).
  4. Send form I-901 and a check or money order of $200 for F-1 visa or $180 for J-1 visa payable in US Dollars, drawn on a US bank to:
