When embarking on a trip to a foreign country from the United States as an F-1 or J-1 student, you must make sure to have the proper documents with you:

Leaving the United States
  • Do you need a visa to enter the country you are visiting? Check the website of the country you will be visiting, to verify whether or not you will need a visa to enter that country.
  • Check http://usembassy.state.gov/ to find the embassy website for the country you will be visiting. You should check this website even if you are planning to visit Canada or Mexico.
Re-entry to the United States

After your trip to a country outside the United States, you will need:

  • A passport valid at least six months into the future.
  • A valid United States F-1 or J-1 visa (unless you are from Canada, OR unless you are traveling to Canada, Mexico or adjacent islands for less than 30 days).
If you need to apply for a new visa at a United States Consulate while abroad, make sure to speak with your International Student Advisor before you go.
  • A valid form I-20 or DS-2019, with a valid signature for travel from Ramapo's Office of International Students / Scholars within the last year, but preferably within the last academic term.
  • Original financial documents which prove the funding listed on your I-20 or DS-2019.

Please be advised that upon entry and departure to the United States, both F and J students will be subject to the US Visit Program. Students will be fingerprinted and photographed, which could cause delays in the airport.

Please plan accordingly. To learn more information about US Visit, please see the following website:
