When embarking on a trip to a foreign country from the United States as an F-1 or J-1 student, you must make sure to have the proper documents with you:
Leaving the United States
- Do you need a visa to enter the country you are visiting? Check the website of the country you will be visiting, to verify whether or not you will need a visa to enter that country.
- Check http://usembassy.state.gov/ to find the embassy website for the country you will be visiting. You should check this website even if you are planning to visit Canada or Mexico.
Re-entry to the United States
After your trip to a country outside the United States, you will need:
- A passport valid at least six months into the future.
- A valid United States F-1 or J-1 visa (unless you are from Canada, OR unless you are traveling to Canada, Mexico or adjacent islands for less than 30 days).
If you need to apply for a new visa at a United States Consulate while abroad, make sure to speak with your International Student Advisor before you go. - A valid form I-20 or DS-2019, with a valid signature for travel from Ramapo's Office of International Students / Scholars within the last year, but preferably within the last academic term.
- Original financial documents which prove the funding listed on your I-20 or DS-2019.
Please be advised that upon entry and departure to the United States, both F and J students will be subject to the US Visit Program. Students will be fingerprinted and photographed, which could cause delays in the airport.
